A critical favourite at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where it took the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard category, Force Majeure is a wickedly funny and precisely-observed black comedy that marks Ruben Östlund as one of Europe’s most piercingly intelligent filmmakers.
The scene in question depicts Tomas (Johannes Bah Kuhnke), a privileged and reasonably handsome man, on vacation at a French ski resort with his attractive wife and their two porcelain children, slumped on the floor in his underpants outside the family’s room and flooding the halls, as his wife glowers overhead, with what C overing much of the same ground as The Loneliest Planet, only without the tedious sub-Antonioni posturing, writer-director Ruben Östlund’s mordantly playful Force Majeure comes down on the essential hollowness of traditional gender roles like the avalanche that proves to be its inciting event. One has to separate out what they think Östlund really means versus what they think he wants a viewer to "get" versus it might all just be an observational expository with no single point and no heroes or villains. There is a lot of subtext here that goes as deep as a viewer is willing to go.
